It's time to dive into a crucial element that often determines success or failure in reaching your goals, and no, it's not motivation or determination, it's: consistency.

The quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way, or of always happening in a similar way.
Many aspire to achieve long lasting results, whether that be losing weight, building muscle, enhancing mental clarity, or simply living a healthier lifestyle. Despite a strong and motivated start, many find themselves faltering after a few weeks. The primary factor that separates those who succeed from those who struggle is consistency. Those who struggle give up when it gets tough or when they've gone "off track" for a day, while those who succeed stick with their lifestyle changes even when faced with challenges (this is consistency).
Why Consistency Matters
Consistency is the backbone of any successful health and wellness journey. It's not about perfection or making radical changes overnight. Instead, it's about making small, manageable changes and sticking to them over time. When you consistently engage in healthy habits, they become second nature, leading to lasting results. The power of consistency can't be overstated. The cumulative effect of consistent effort far outweighs sporadic bursts of intense focus.
And this goes for every aspect of life. Think about school for example, 30 minute study session each day for a month will give you greater results on your test rather than cramming the night before for 6 hours on end.
Consistency in Physical Activity
When it comes to physical activity, consistency trumps intensity. You don't need to spend hours in the gym every day to see results. In fact, trying to do too much too soon can lead to burnout or injury. Instead, focus on developing a routine that you can maintain in the long run. Regular, moderate exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The benefits occur over time, which emphasizes that sporadic, intense efforts are far less effective.
Aim to incorporate some form of physical activity into your daily routine, whether it's a morning jog, a yoga session, or a brisk walk during your lunch break. The important thing is to stay active regularly. Even on days when you're not feelings your best, a light workout can help maintain the momentum and reinforce the habit. If you're in a bad mood, a light workout session or a walk outside can help relieve the bad mood.
Consistency in Nutrition
A balanced diet is super important for good health, but it's not just about what you eat, it's about how regularly you eat a balanced diet too. It's easy to be motivated to eat healthy meals for a few days, but the real challenge (& the real benefit) comes from maintaining that effort in your nutrition day after day.
Start with small, sustainable changes in your diet. Perhaps try adding an extra serving of vegetables to your meals or swapping a sugary/processed snack for fruits. Try sticking to the small changes for a while before trying to make drastic changes in your habits. Over time, small adjustments will lead to big changes and improvements in your overall health.
Consistency in Mental Health
Mental wellness is just as important as physical health, and consistency plays a vital role in this too. Mindfulness, meditation, and stress management for example can significantly improve your mental health, but they need to be done regularly to be effective. Set aside time each day (whether it be as soon as you wake up, or before bed, or during lunch) for activities that help you de-stress and center your mind. It can be journaling, meditation, stretching, deep breathing, or anything that helps you "switch off" your mind for a bit, and be present. Consistent practice will help you build resilience and maintain mental clarity.
Establishing and maintaining routines, whether through exercise, diet, or mindfulness practices, can significantly reduce anxiety and depression. The predictable nature of a routine provides a sense of control and stability, which is beneficial in managing stress and preventing mental health issues. The process of building habits and forming routines is rooted in the brain's neuroplasticity. According to research it takes about 66 days on average to form a new habit (which will require consistency in those 66 days). By consistently practicing a new behaviour, the brain strengthens the neural pathways associated with that behaviour, making it easier and more automatic over time.
Consistency in Rest & Recovery
Rest is often overlooked in the pursuit of health and wellness, but it's a critical component of overall wellbeing. Consistent sleep patterns, regular relaxation, and proper recovery time are essential for physical and mental health.
Why People Struggle with Consistency
The Motivation Trap
Motivation is a powerful initial driver, but is inherently fleeting. When people rely on motivation rather than consistency in order to reach their goals, they often find themselves struggling. When initial excitement wanes or when life gets busy, motivation easily disappears, leaving people struggling to stick to their health routines. This is why habits, routines, and systems are far more reliable than motivation alone.
The All-or-Nothing Mentality
The all-or-nothing mentality: "I have to do all these healthy habits right now, and if I can't do it I might as well not do any of them". Many people set unrealistic goals and when they fail to meet them perfectly, they abandon their efforts altogether. This "black and white" thinking can lead to a cycle of starting and stopping, which is frustrating as well as counterproductive.
A Lack of Immediate Results
We are often searching for instant gratification, we want rewards & rewarding feelings straight away, but health and wellness are long term endeavours. The lack of immediate results can be discouraging, leading many to give up too soon.
If you eat one salad that doesn't immediately make you "healthy", and vice versa, if you eat one double cheeseburger with fries and a coke from McDonalds that doesn't immediately make you "unhealthy". It's the long term consistent intake that determines more than the one occurrence.
The most profound changes in health and wellness come from gradual, consistent efforts.
Tips for Building Consistency
Set realistic goals: small, achievable goals that fit into your lifestyle are less overwhelming. For example, add a 10 minute walk everyday or eat an extra fruit everyday. Break down your larger goals into smaller ones. For example, instead of focusing on losing 10kg in a month, focus on losing 0.5 - 0.8kg a week.
Create routines: daily or weekly schedule that incorporates health & wellness activities. The more these activities become a part of your routine and start feeling like habits, the easier they will be to maintain.
Track progress: seeing your progress can motivate you to keep going.
Stay flexible: life happens. You might miss a workout or go out and eat a big meal with friends. That's ok, that's normal. What matters is getting back on track and not letting it derail all your work. Consistency in the bigger picture.
Get a support system: friends, family, or a community group with people who share health goals or simply provide encouragement, accountability, & a sense of camaraderie makes a significant difference in maintaining consistency.
Consistency ≠ perfection. It's about making a commitment to yourself & sticking with it, even when things get tough. Give it your all everyday, but that doesn't mean it has to be 100% every day. Sometimes your all is 32%, some days it's 85%, give what you can and feel satisfied with that. If your all on a certain day is 62%, and you give 62% into what you do, you've given it your all.
It's the steady, repeated action (not the "grand gestures" that lead to lasting change. By recognizing the common barriers, and implementing small, manageable changes, anyone can begin to build a healthier, more resilient life.
The journey will not always be easy, but with patience, persistence, and a focus on consistency, the results will be well worth the effort.
